This was a collaborative flyer I made with Lee Summers. Originally we passed some paper back and forth adding in creatures and doodles, and all sorts of craziness surrounding the main image. In the end, it was too much and we took all that out. We ended up simply using my drawing of the famous photograph taken on V-Day when a sailor kissed a random woman in Times Square. Lee created the type, and bam!, another Sealions flyer is created. This is gonna be a rad show.

Mixt Tape Process

I recently did a painting for the Mixt Show presented by Mint Art Gallery. I titled my work "Side One is the Loneliest Number". Most of my accompanied mix tape featured some of my favorite sad bastard music such as "Lover, You Should've Come Over" by Jeff Buckley, and "Love and Some Verses" by Iron & Wine. It was a quick piece done in a few days using my spare time. I thought everyone would have my same idea. A very simple painting of a mix tape. But to my surprise, no one did. Here's how I came to the final product, in all it's J Trav lookin' style.

[1] First, a quick pen sketch.

[2] Then, I live traced it in Illustrator to give that satisfying cleanliness.

[3] After that, I experimented with color variations until I found one I liked.

[4] A two day paint job utilizing my available paints and my colorblind eyes. 11" x 15".

[5] And finally, the finished product displayed at the Mint Gallery.

My New Job

I now work for a toy company doing package design in Marietta. It's going well so far. Been hard adjusting to full time work and traffic. Last week I designed "gross" pencils for boys. I created them completely from my own illustrations rather than stock imagery which they use here often. I think they are pretty fun.

It's definetely a change to design for a younger market, but a great start in my field. Do wish there was some motion, but hopefully they will let me create thier website.

Well, I graduated. It's official. I've been workin' dippin' dots at turner field, and looking for jobs and trying to let my brain breathe. Applied to a number already. If anyone hasn't seen my website, head on over here: j trav.net

I will have some free time now that its summer to work on some more personal projects of my own. There's some large watercolor paintings I've been looking forward to, and a music video for a new track from our Sealions EP, Luna Park, will be in the works. Among other projects.

Done a few new designs four our band. Below is the new T-Shirt design, which is more intricate than the previous version a few posts earlier. And we had a birthday party photo shoot. Here's one of Berly's photos. They were taken with a large scale camera. Notice my awkward face. But I'm glad our band photos don't look like contrived band photos. They are all fun and different. I've also been creating the sealions website, located at sealionsmusic.com. I think its coming along nicely.

This is funny. The guy that does these at Lenny's drew one for me in January when my oldest friend, Lydia, was in town. I didn't have barely any cash on me so he accepted $3. What a nice guy. He does these amazingly fast, about 5 minutes or so. I was obliged to give him the full amount this time. $20. I think its worth it for special occasions. Shannon and I just celebrated our 2 year anniversary. Look at my big dumb grin! Support your fellow artist!

Today I went on an adventure by myself. Not so much an adventure, but just a trip to the zoo. But the zoo is an adventure!! (Cue phony music). Anyway, I went to take pictures of the carousel at the zoo for a school project I'm revising, and decided to enjoy the zoo while I was there. I really love the zoo. While I was taking pictures of the carousel, a man working there told me he was looking for a photographer for some future projects. So, I took his business card. Good thing I'm making some of my very own business cards this semester so I can exchange properly with people. I didn't tell him I was borrowing Lee's camera. I did tell him I'm a Georgia State student about to graduate in Graphic Design. He probably thought I was creepy taking pictures of little kids on the carousel at the zoo, and it didn't help that I was still wearing sweat pants from my ab workout earlier this afternoon. SO, the carousel ending having zoo animals on it rather than the traditional horse I was looking for, but the pictures are blurred on purpose and hopfeully it won't matter. It was fun. Here's some of the pictures I took of the zoo animals. Enjoy. I need an SLR Digital camera, they are sweeeeet.

"I'm lovin it" I mean, come on, what the fuck does that say? It could be anything. No offense to anyone, but I haven't eaten McDonalds in over 6 years, and I will never eat it again for the rest of my life. I think the album artwork really adds to my love of these records. When a record looks like it sounds, the creative talent has done their job. When a theme is carried out, or when a mood is conveyed, that helps as well. I believe At Home With Owen has some of my favorite artwork. I've always loved Carson Ellis' work with the Decemberists. The nominations for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards were revealed today, with Thom Yorke being nominated in the 'Best Alternative Album' category. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also nominated. It doesn't feel like that Strokes album came out almost a year ago on January 3rd. But they started the year off right. I remember seeing advertisements all over Japan while I was there last Christmas.

Between work on the Corporate Identity Manuel, I've been working a few other small projects. One is a cover of a compilation CD my friend, Chris Reath, is giving away as a Christmas Gift. Its called "Chris-Mix", and has a record in place of a wreath, partially due to Christmas, but mainly due to his last name. I'm almost done with my animation short, Bingo Wings, and hope to finish that before Christmas, because I also had the idea of giving away a homemade gift.

I found this article in the most recent issue of SPIN magazine and found it very interesting and inspiring. Yeah, I know, I talk about my band a lot, but I don't feel I've quite found our identity yet, visually. Our last EP had simple imagery, and was grayscale. We're recording a new record soon, and I want all the artwork to feel as cohesive as possible, and I'm excited to work around a theme and create unique and exciting original artwork, that could carry over to stickers, buttons, t-shirts, tote bags, etc.

I came across a few of Cold War Kids stickers at Criminal Records. I really love the style of their imagery. Fits their name, and recalls classic graphic design. I haven't heard much of thier music, but I like what I've heard. Nice use of Type. Clearly, Matt Maust is a very talented designer.

They have a nice website, with so many beautiful photos and artwork. Here's the cover of their Benefit at the District album.

Midlake is my current obsession. Thier latest album, The Trials of Van Occupanther, is my favorite this year so far. Its an intimate disc, with beautiful vocal melodies and harmonies. They have thoughtful lyrics, and gentle hooks. The band takes influence from America, and Fleetwood Mac, crafting a pleasant listening experience.

I used to talk to Steve, the amusing sound magician at Primal Screen, about music quite often, and he discovered that I listen to "that pretty music." Which I guess is true. I do enjoy Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy, Camera Obscura, and I guess Midlake would also fit in with those artists as well. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. But that's another entry. For now, enjoy Midlake's beautiful video for "Young Bride".

This is going to be a really fun post.
I have some pictures from the three shows we played recently. I'm only going to post a couple. Lee Summers took Sealions photos, so they really should go on his blog. I did however take a lot of pictures myself. Mostly of The Coathangers, my best friend Stephanie's all girl band (she's the drummer). Their band is sooooo good, I'm really proud of them. I'm working on a concert film of sorts, documenting the house show that took place at our house where 4 bands played. I recorded audio seperate from the video, and I plan on splicing them together and editing it down to maybe one or two songs from each band. Now, on with the pictures.

10 > Swamp Dogg. Rat On! (1971)

I've actually been having a rat problem at my house, and so this really bugs me. One of them looked right at me before scurrying off. Also, I guess Snoop wasn't the first one to use two G's in his name. Makes that nice long "G" sound. Rat On! What does that even mean?

There seems to be a Dog theme here. This album cover may be bad, but Thor's music is pretty dang sweet if i do say so myself. And i do.

The Tuesday, October 17th Sealions show has now been moved to Wednesday, October 18th due to some leaky pipes. If anyone is still interested in hearing some kick ass music come on down. Doors at 9. My best friend Stephanie's all girl band, The Coathangers, are opening up (their first show), and brothers Lamar and Sean's Opera Sequence play after that (their first show as well). I've been practicing my brains out for 3 live shows. Basically I've learned about 35 songs for our acoustic Travis & Alan restuarant gig. Its around the corner from the Earl in East Atlanta, so please stop by if you can. Also been practicing for the two Sealions shows, and putting together a small Six Ways reunion set. (That's my previous band.) This weekend we are starting the voice recordings for my animation side project, Bingo Wings, and I'm think that's going to be a lot of fun.

I've been chugging away at the corporate identity manuel, coming up with some good ideas. Still have to look into paper samples.

I also worked at a fair all weekend. In Gay, Georgia. I encountered many cotton pickin' country bumpkins. I could understand little that anyone said. I tried to get inspired there, but nothing much excited me besides the apple pies being sold across the way from our ice cream trailer. After 6 hours of talking them up, I had one, and was seriously let down. Here's another flyer for the show. They have good food there too. No apple pies, though.

Thanks to class being optional on Wednesday, I was able to arrive early to see Sufjan Stevens at the Fox. I had been looking forward to this show for quite some time. It was phenomenal. And the Fox was more fabulous than I remember. I saw Tori Amos there in '96, and a screening of The Matrix in the summer of '00. So this was my 3rd visit. I'd never used the bathrooms there before. They are incredible. Check out the history of the Fox here, which I find rather interesting.

Everyone was wearing bird, or butterfly wings, and he often rang some bells during instrumental passages.
He played songs from most of his albums, and he brought along his own orchestra which performed beautiful renditions of his already intricate arrangements. My favorite part of the show was the encore in which he performed two of my favorite songs. I really couldn't ask for anything more in a performance. A friend of Shannon's, Tim, was in the 2nd row and he took great video and photos. Here's a clip of "Chicago"

Atlanta plan calls for creation of 22-mile loop of transit and trails

The Gwinnett County investor who owns five miles of Atlanta's planned Beltline in Northeast Atlanta abandoned plans this afternoon to develop the property and donate a portion of it to Atlanta for use as parks, trails and transit. He is considering his options for the property, he said.

Wayne Mason withdrew his rezoning applications at about 2 p.m. Mason needed to have Atlanta rezone the property, about 70 acres, to allow construction of just over 3,000 residences, along with retail space.

The company headed by Mason, Northeast Atlanta Beltline Group, issued a statement that raises questions about whether Atlanta officials are serious about building the Beltline, which is to be a 22-mile loop of transit and trails flanked by parks.

"After nearly two years, we have every reason to be skeptical of the entire Beltline project," the company said in a statement. "To realize the Beltline, there has to be property ownership. Given the city's lack of ownership of any land in the 22-mile Beltline, their lack of money to buy the land and the highly speculative nature of their proposal to us, we realized that like other visions, this one is unlikely to sustain itself."

Atlanta on Tuesday asked Northeast Atlanta Beltline Group to trade all of its land in exchange for the development rights for about 2,000 residential units, the statement said. The city valued the deal for Mason at $48 million to $100 million. Mason paid $25 million for the property.

Steve Cover, Atlanta's planning commissioner, said last week that the city's proposal was based on calculations on Mason's profits if he accepted the deal.

The action raises questions about the timetable for building the Beltline's network of parks, trails and transit in Northeast Atlanta. Mason had intended to donate about 43 acres of his land to Atlanta for public use. The corridor is the core of the planned route of the Beltline through Northeast Atlanta.

As you may or may not know, I've been carless for a year, but I finally gathered up enough money to finance this sweet 2001 Toyota Corolla. I wanted either a Toyota or a Honda. I had a Ford (Fixed or Repaired Daily) Taurus for 6 years, until I had my first wreck last September and killed my car. I ended up with a piece of the dash, and $25 from Perkins. ("Perkins, come take my junk car!")

I feel like I'm accepted an award. I'd like to give a few thanks. First I'd like to thank my Grandparents and Mother for helping out. I'd like to thank my girlfriend, Shannon, for driving my ass around for a year, and for buying me a bike so I could get to my internship. So many people to thank, I hope I don't leave anyone out. I'd like to thank marta. I'd also like to thank everyone that has given me a ride in the past year. You know who you are. I really don't know what to make of this commercial. There is some nice rotoscoping of Audrey Hepburn, taken from Funny Face. It is a bit confusing to see her dancing from 1957 to a song from 1980, marketing jeans for 2006. But if this commercial gets people interested in Audrey Hepburn, or dancing, or AC/DC for that matter, then that's a good thing. (Although I prefer Bon Scott era AC/DC) Oh yeah, and I guess selling a few pair of jeans while they're at it would be good for their company.

Trey Laird, creative director of Gap said, "Gap has a rich history of integrating memorable choreography and music into our advertising, but we've never done anything quite like this before."

I've been a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn for as long as I can remember. I own all her films and have read many books about her. I feel like she would approve. Especially since its helping her worthy cause. Check it out for yourself.

Been working on the Beltline logo, and researching NASCAR. My group needs to get together soon. I need to talk with them about ideas I have and well, the project in general.

Awhile back I designed the cover for our (SEALIONS) Ultramarine EP. I decided to scrap my original version and go in another more minimal direction. Here's the original cover design.

It was a bit difficult to read anyway. So I decided to stay with a more grayscale feel. Here's the design we've decided to go with. I'm using the printing cover on envelopes, which has the CD inside. I feel like it's a more interesting approach than any kind of plastic case. And the back of the envelope is sealed with a small round sticker with a sealions logo on it.

I also finished up my comic book a few months ago, which I started almost 4 years ago. I want to post the entire book online, high-dpi, since printing it and putting it together has become a slightly difficult task. I have one printing copy right now. I retouched my art with Photoshop, and I've read quite a few online comics, so I think it could look really good online. Here's two sample pages.

And finally, for this update, I wanted to include my newest collage which I just finished up today. The french reads, "Pictures are blind."

I just finished up a collage I started last week. What better place to post it than in my blog. It has a wedding theme...I think. I planned out the composition with a lot in mind such as color, shape, positive/negative space, and keeping the eye flowing through the piece.

I noticed that my roomate had a bunch of really old "Saturday Evening Post" Magazines in his car. Primarily dated from 1960. I asked if I could have one, maybe the one that was beaten up the most. He said ok, and I felt like i'd struck gold. I want all of them! But really, one is fine. Apparently his mom found them somewhere. The one I have is from Sept 19, 1959. The images are wonderful and very much inspiring and captures that mid-century americana quality. I plan on using more images in collages that I create.

This is a small piece I sold at an art show I did last April at West Egg Cafe.

And here's a piece I started with the intention of the CD Box Set we did last semester. I originally wanted to do a Post-Beatles Box Set. Each CD would be a best of each member's solo work. I adore each of their first Solo Records. John's Plastic Ono Band, George's All Things Must Pass, Paul's Self Titled, and Ringo's...well, I don't own that one, but he's done some amiable solo work. I was going to call the set Here, There, and Everywhere. If you don't own Plastic Ono Band do yourself a favor and get it. My favorite record of all time.

I designed a lot of posters this summer for various bands, and such. Here's one i did for my old drummer's new band, Screaming Torso. They're a horror-punk type band like the Misfits. I designed their logo. After about a month, I realized that I left out the "i" in "screaming". I mentioned it to them, and they hadn't even really noticed. As you can see, it reads perfectly fine. I do however, want to design some new logos for them. I got the idea for this one from one of the movie fonts I designed last year. Skulls are like, da bomb. (Never mention I said that, it was a joke.)

I would like to re-do this idea. I took 3 photos, all of them with different light, so they don't match completely. I had them shine a flashlight upwards. Thus, my friend John looks like he has no nose. But the idea is there, I'd just like to make it better.

This is a picture I took of myself(s) in my old apartment. I love experimenting with what looks like trick photography. I'm also in love with stop motion which I've experimented with extensively.

This is a picture I took from the Tokyo Subway. Steph, Joey, and me. I'll post more pictures from Tokyo soon. This was around 5 in the morning in probably the most desolate area we found during our entire visit.

So it looks like I have my nerves settled a little bit. However, I'm a bit upset that I don't have my graduation audit in my hands right now, but soon enough."Everything will work out", everyone keeps telling me. And i guess i am freaking out a little bit, but i just want to concentrate on the projects at hand, and not be worried that for some reason i'm missing a credit to graduate.

It looks like this semester is all about transportation. Trains and Cars. I'm very excited about it!

I dropped the Italian Reniassance Class i applied for. I went today and I don't think it would have been so bad if the teacher wasn't so boring and hard to understand. I love the period but I want to be enthused about it. I'm going to take an independent study class next semester and everything will be ok, as everyone says.

Ok. I'm going to stop worrying about it now.

I purchased two books recently. They are wonderful and very inspiring.
The first is Index-A by Charles Wilkin. He's a designer that has an amazing eye for composition and cohesion. Some pages remind me of my favorite collage artists, Kurt Scwitters and Robert Raschenburg. He also brings a very comtemporary feel to his art, with line and shape.

The other book is ABZ - More Alphabets and Other Signs Edited by Julian Rothenstein and Mel Gooding. I noticed that atleast 3 people at Primal Screen owned this book. It is filled with typography, nostalgia, emblems, logos, avant-garde. Beautiful material. Unpredictable.

Besides these books, I like to keep a running collection of work that inspires me. I make a folder with links to inspiration. One site that i check back to frequently is motionographer.com. They showcase all the latest and greatest in post production and motion graphics. You should check it out.

This is the start of my blog. I guess I'll begin by re-capping my summer 06.

I interned at Primal Screen all summer. I learned so much and made many wonderful friends. I worked on animation and post production for PBS Kids, Disney Channel, Commercials, among other work. In my free time I worked on an animation of my own called "Bingo Wings". I have yet to record the voices, but I dabbled in animating the characters. Here's a poster I made for my project.

I also spent time created posters for my band, Sealions. I made a flash website I'll post eventually. You can hear us at SEALIONS. There is space left blank for show dates and other information. Here's a few of them.

I'm still trying to get a feel for this blog. I want to customize it. Might take a while to get it looking exactly how i want. But here's the look for the time being.
